2015 Hazen Scrubs Camp garners 125 registrations

For three years, Marie Mettler of Sakakawea Medical Center and Kandi Olson of Coal Country Community Health have collaborated on organizing and directing the annual Scrubs Camp for eighth grade students from Mercer and Oliver counties.
This year, 125 students from Hazen Middle School, Beulah and Center-Stanton registered for the one day event.
“We’re especially pleased with the turnout,” said Mettler last week at the camp. “The school population is growing, especially in Beulah.”
Olson was quick to point out none of this would be possible without the schools buying into the program designed to help young people consider a career in healthcare.
“We appreciate the support all the schools give us by allowing their eigth graders to come for the day,” Olson said.
“All of us have had really good reports from the kids that have gone through the camp and they have been feeding the younger kids on what to look forward to.”
The camp was broken up into 30 minute sessions on a rotating system, and kids were given the chance to visit stations that included a heart station, colon, suturing, nutrition, physical therapy, respiratory, injections, IV’s, hospital patient accessories and ambulance training.
The program was funded by the Center for Rural Health again this year.
