Hazen Public Pool suffers setback, opening soon

Rain postpones Cops and Kids Fishing Derby
Persistent downpours over the weekend put a hold on the third annual Cops and Kids Fishing Derby last weekend but, weather permitting, little fishers will get another chance this Saturday. Held at Harmony Lake north of Hazen, the Mercer County Peace Officers Association is taking advantage of the free fishing day provided by the North Dakota Game and Fish Department to lure young fishermen to the small watering hole.
County takes their time on decision to petition DOT
With time on the agenda at last Wednesday’s Mercer County Commission meeting, the commission decided to take more time on their decision on whether or not to petition the Department of Transportation to transfer Mercer County from Mountain time to Central time.
Hazen residents to vote on natural gas
In a special election Tuesday, Hazen residents will vote whether or not to bring natural gas services into Hazen. Specifically, voters will determine if the city of Hazen shall “form a municipal utility for the purpose of owning or leasing a natural gas pipeline distribution system within the city of Hazen.”
Controversy blooms after proposal to uproot nursery
Dalles Krause Jr. and Kari Olson, co-owners of Krause’s Super Valu, Hazen, feel it would spur economic growth and development in the city of Hazen. Members of the Hazen Forestry Board expressed worries that it could endanger the city’s source of all that is green and aesthetic in Hazen.
It’s about time (zone), once again
The last time the issue came up, Mercer County Commissioner Wayne Entze received “nasty” phone calls and went nights without sleep, he said. Needless to say, lines are passionately divided in Mercer County.
HHS graduates ‘awesome’ class
It was a short and simple statement, but got big cheers from those in the audience donning caps and gowns. After welcoming the gathered crowd to Hazen High School’s 2009 Commencement Exercises, senior Andrew Karges gazed out at his peers from the stage and said three simply sweet words: “We are awesome.”
Hazen High School Class of 2009 Salutatorian Clay Brinkman has been named a finalist for the National Merit Scholarship – an academic achievement that HHS Principal Ed Boger hasn’t seen in eight years as principal. And the intelligent senior isn’t even class valedictorian.
