The ins and outs of a Mercer County Christian school
Several Hazen residents are gauging community interest in the idea of beginning a Christian school in Mercer County, most likely in Hazen or Beulah. Last Thursday, Shiloh-Christian School Administrator Dr. Ross Reinhiller, Bismarck, stopped at Hazen City Hall to provide interested residents the ins and outs of operating a private Christian school in Mercer County.

Local vehicle sales stable despite national woes
Auto dealerships in Mercer County and statewide have seen little of the adverse sales effects being felt by auto dealerships across the country. "We're fortunate in North Dakota. The local economy is strong and our dealers are showing healthy sales, " said Robert Lamp, president and CEO of the Auto Dealers Association of North Dakota, in a press release. "North Dakota is the exception to all the gloom and doom we are hearing and seeing nationally."
Commission to seek public input on
The Hazen City Commission took one small step toward turning the potential for natural gas service to reality - agreeing Monday evening to an exclusivity agreement with Michigan companies Major Pipelines LLC and Porter Survey PC. Now, they will poll the public to get their thoughts. About one week ago, Hazen City Planner Steve Frovarp met with Gerald Rushmore, Major Pipelines primary contractor and their company's attorney to discuss an exclusivity agreement, which would prevent the city of Hazen from dealing with any other contractors until after 2013.

Area events ensure merry holiday season

Many Hazen stores will open at 6 a.m. to offer truly fantastic specials that will help you quickly check off your shopping list, all while supporting your local businesses.
County responders attend training exercise
It was 3:30 in the afternoon on Aug. 30. Doppler Radar indicated severe weather in western North Dakota, and it was quickly making its way toward Mercer County. The storm packed a punch of fierce winds and heavy rains - and it was only intensifying. Suddenly, the county dispatcher's voice cut through the casual discussion in the room. A tornado had hit Coyote Station and Dakota Westmoreland's home base just south of Beulah. People were hurt and buildings were destroyed. Help was needed from responders throughout the county. This was the scenario presented to emergency responders from across the county at the Local Emergency Planning Committee/Multi-Hazard Mitigation Planning Committee's functional training exercise held at the Beulah Civic Center last Wednesday evening. The exercise was part of the Local Government Homeland Security Training and Exercise Program.
Blizzard challenges street crews
Somewhere in the corner of the Hazen City Commission meeting room Monday evening, Mother Nature was snickering. And after dumping nearly 10 inches of wet, heavy snow on Hazen two weeks ago, Hazen city street crews have been left to deal with the aftermath. Disobedience of Hazen parking ordinances has been making the street crews' job difficult, Hazen City Foreman George Quast said.

It seems unimaginable that as recently as Labor Day, in the midst of a presidential campaign, this nation's top economists were struggling to determine if our nation's economic downturn was in fact, a recession. Now, just two months removed from the end of summer, Americans find themselves surrounded by news of doom, with an economy thundering down a financial abyss that appears to have no bottom.

Area blasted with season's first winter weather By Chris Gessele Last Thursday, Hazen was smack in the middle of a blizzard warning, and on the cold end of the first adverse weather conditions of this young winter season. Several parts of Mercer County reported nearly 10 inches of snow - the most snow accumulation in one shot the area has seen in a recent memory. Because the snow came with lots and lots of wind, the weather's effects - but immediate and long-term - were felt in Hazen and throughout the area.
