Area blasted with season's first winter weather By Chris Gessele Last Thursday, Hazen was smack in the middle of a blizzard warning, and on the cold end of the first adverse weather conditions of this young winter season. Several parts of Mercer County reported nearly 10 inches of snow - the most snow accumulation in one shot the area has seen in a recent memory. Because the snow came with lots and lots of wind, the weather's effects - but immediate and long-term - were felt in Hazen and throughout the area.
Election: A 'General' disappointment
Hazen city Measure Nos. 1 and 2 fail By Chris Gessele As the Mercer County General Election results slowly emerged, two ballot issues were of primary focus among Hazenites: City Measure Nos. 1 and 2. On those, Hazen residents voted "Not quite" and "We're not sold." City Measure No. 1 Hazen city Measure No. 1 would have allowed the Hazen City Commission to levy up to 5 mills on real property within Hazen to establish a permanent fire reserve fund for the purchase of equipment. Because it involved a mill levy increase, the issue needed 60 percent in favor to pass.

Those willing to build a natural gas pipeline through Mercer County are ready to move forward. Hazen and Beulah's decision-makers aren't quite yet sold.

It all comes down to Tuesday. Tuesday, Nov. 4, votes will be cast at polls across the nation. In Mercer County, voters will hit the polls and mail-in ballots will be tallied for the 2008 General Election.

Fire damages structure at LOS
A structure that housed fiberglass chimney liner and other unspecified chemicals caught fire Tuesday evening, emitting potentially toxic smoke into the air. The structure was located .25 miles southeast of Leland Olds Station's main generating facility. According to Mercer County Sheriff Dean Danzeisen, 13 area residents were evacuated and about 4 miles of State Highway 200A was closed. There were no reported injuries.
