The best of 2012
The year was full of triumphs, loss, changes and growth. Hazen and the surrounding area was not immune to big stories and breaking news, and the Hazen Star was there to capture it all. We had exploding champions, controversial developments and the arrival of drinking water after 20 years of waiting. Another year has ended and 2013 is here, but Hazen still remembers and is affected by the events of the past 12 months. Here are the Top Five Stories of 2012.
Operation health assessment complete
The data is in and the lists have been made. All that is left is to decide how to use it. Thirty-three health professionals and area leaders met Dec. 4 at the Mercer County Ambulance classroom to discuss a Community Health Needs Assessment, which covered Mercer, Oliver and Dunn counties. The study, which is required for hospitals every three years, was conducted by the University of North Dakota Center for Rural Health. It was the first time the counties worked together on the project.
Commission rejects highway dept. suggestion
STANTON -- The Mercer County Commission accepted a bid for a front end loader from RDO Equipment Co. against the highway department’s recommendation during a meeting. The commissioners unanimously voted Dec. 19 at the County Courthouse to take the bid from RDO, though Highway Superintendent Roy Braun suggested they buy from Butler Machinery Co.
Merry Christmas
Voices and the sound of instruments rang through the Hazen Elementary School Gym as more than 50 musicians shared their talents with the people of Hazen Saturday and Sunday. It was all part of the 56th annual Knife River Chorale Concert, which attracts singers from across North Dakota and even out of state, according to several members.
