Bank stabilization benefits 2 entities
Massive chunk by massive chunk, the Knife River clawed within feet of County Road 18 following the major flood event this past spring. While eating toward the road, the rapid erosion also threatened sites of great historic significance to Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site. Safety was everyone’s foremost concern as Mercer County and the national park began discussing the possibility of moving County 18 further north out of the earth-hungry river’s reach. It’s something that has been done three times since 1935, according to KRIV Superintendent Brian McCutchen.
