Boy Scout pitches Dog Park to City Commission
Interest piqued in patio homes

It’s time for Hazen Boy Scout Jordan Grosz to undertake an Eagle Scout Project. He’s decided on a dog park, and Tuesday evening he pitched the idea to the Hazen City Commission.
Grosz – along with Hazen Parks and Recreation Director Joe Amundson – browsed several sites within Hazen, Grosz said, and found a suitable site in city-owned lots 3, 4 and possibly 5 near the tennis courts in North Star Third Addition, southwest of Warren and Betty Lou Jensen’s residence in north Hazen.
With a fire hydrant nearby and a power line overhead, the site would be suited for such a park, Amundson said. A chain link fence would be placed on the property’s premises, which parks and rec. has on hand, and park maintenance would be a parks and rec. issue, Amundson added.
“I like that location – and would enhance it, I think,” Commissioner Myra Axtman said. “There is a lot of people who really like their pets, and a (dog park) would be another reason people would live (in Hazen) or stay here. I definitely like the idea.”
The basic selling price of the lots would be $3,700-3,800, City Planner Steve Frovarp said. That price would include a $3,500 flat rate, with the rest being special assessments. The property is in the flood zone and would possibly require some fill, Frovarp said, and added the area is currently zoned R1, which limits the property to single-family homes. To build a dog park would probably require rezoning to R2, which would allow for recreational use.
Axtman suggested the proposition go before the Hazen Planning and Zoning Committee before the City Commission takes any action on the matter.
