City Commission approves preliminary budget
Farmers aren’t the only ones with sweat on their brow come August. It’s also Hazen City budget season, and the Hazen City Commission met twice in the past week to take a scrutinizing eye to the budget numbers before them. To begin the first budgeting session last Thursday, City Auditor Sandy Bohrer explained the essentials of budgeting season. The budget, at its very core, is the master blueprint for planning, control and evaluation of fund financial operations, Bohrer said. The City of Hazen currently has 24 active funds in five categories: general, debt service, internal service, economic development/sales tax and enterprise. The general fund is the City’s chief operating fund, used to account for all financial resources except those specifically required to be accounted for in other funds. Bohrer added the City’s 2008 general fund budget includes $1,219,663.
