City maps out road projects

By April Baumgarten

Hazen city officials got a better look at what road projects they will need to focus on next year.
Commissioners Mark Nygard and Casey Stern presented a map to the commission Monday during a meeting at City Hall highlighting roads that need to be repaired in 2014. The largest project is an overlay of Main Street. The last major overhaul of Main Street was in 1999, city auditor Monte Erhardt said.
Other projects include the frontage road near Alco, Fourth Avenue Northwest, First Avenue Northeast between the Hazen High School and Fifth Street Northeast and Fourth Street Northeast from Fourth to First Avenue Northeast.
There are streets that could be added to the project, Public Works Director George Quast said.
“Right now it’s kind of tough to go out and see anything,” he said, adding there are several roads not on the list that can be considered.
The commission could not make a decision before it decided what areas it would repair. A resolution by next meeting to develop assessment district.
The city needs to look at getting on a contractor’s schedule to “get the ball rolling after the first of the year,” Nygard said.
