City secures funding for flood protection project
It takes a lot of money to avoid expensive flood insurance.
The Hazen City Commission learned at their regular meeting Monday evening that Refunding Improvement Bonds totaling $530,000 have been sold to help fund projects along Antelope Creek, which runs through Hazen along the State Highway 200 bypass.
The projects, which include nearly-completed installation of a double box culvert near the bridge north of Hiway Express, is intended to create 3 or more feet of freeboard along the bypass and keep the bypass a certified levee in the eyes of FEMA. If the levee was de-certified, all of Hazen south of the bypass would plummet into the expensive high-risk flood insurance zone.
