Commission OKs Hazen natural gas survey

For the city of Hazen to get natural gas, the utility must be owned by the city.

But would Hazen’s citizens welcome the utility – and more importantly, consider signing up for the utility?

The Hazen City Commission hopes to soon find out.

In a meeting of the commission Monday evening, the commissioners unanimously approved the mailing of a survey to gauge residents’ feelings toward the city establishing a municipal natural gas utility, as well as if the resident would consider signing up for natural gas service.

Natural gas services as a municipal utility would essentially be "a city-run gas company," Hazen City Planner Steve Frovarp said.

Commissioner Mike Krause expressed concern that citizens may not have enough information to determine if they are even interested in the utility being city-run.
