Commission promises to address reclamation concern

By Daniel Arens

Lack of work on restoring land from a gravel pit is raising concerns from one local landowner.
Tom Welk came to the Mercer County Commission meeting Dec. 18 at the museum in Beulah to discuss the issue with the commissioners.
“My gravel pit is supposed to be a done deal,” Welk said. “And it hasn’t had any reclamation done at all hardly.”
Welk said he’s asked about the progress on the reclamation several times and received no responsive action, although this is the first time he has brought up the issue before the full commission.
In addition, Welk mentioned concerns about the condition of the road near his property, where it goes up a hill. He said the road is tilted, with one end higher up than the other. Although it is labeled a “minimum maintenance” road, it is not a section line and is a through road used by the public.
