Concern raised over property tax hike

By Daniel Arens

As Mercer County continues to face a gloomy financial picture, there is also concern about the tax picture facing county residents.
Casey Voigt, a rural Mercer County resident, approached the commission at a meeting in Beulah Dec. 19 to raise some of his concerns about property taxes, with a focus on trying to look for other ways to offset the budget deficit beside these taxes.
During the discussions leading up to approval of the 2019 budget, the county commission was able to make major cuts to services in order to avoid a 30 percent tax increase. However, even with those cuts, a more modest increase in revenue was also needed, with a raise of a little over 5 percent in property taxes.
