Concerned county citizens organize for petition drive

In Dr. Seuss’ book “The Lorax,” a boy learns that “unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing’s going to get better. It’s not.”
Karen Mack, Hazen, doesn’t prescribe living by a message from a children’s book – though she does hold one similar fundamental belief.
“If you’re unhappy about something, get involved,” Mack said. “It’s becoming a part of something that you want fixed or changed.”
Setting those beliefs in motion, Mack coordinated an organizational meeting Saturday at Sue’s Cafe in Hazen to begin the process of circulating two petitions that could mean big changes in the government of Mercer County.
One petition is collecting signatures in support of placing on the ballot the question of whether the number of Mercer County Commissioners should increase from three to five, and the second petition is collecting signatures in support of placing on the ballot whether those commissioners should be elected at-large.
