County burn ban in effect
With wisps of smoke still floating from charred prairie the afternoon of Feb. 2, Hazen Fire Chief Dan Wettstein had seen enough.
Wettstein called a few fellow Mercer County fire chiefs that afternoon to suggest a burn ban, and by the end of the day the Mercer County Commission had signed off on a temporary countywide ban of all open burning.
