Flood risk lessened, but flood prep goes on
An unprecedented extended thaw has lessened the chance of a damaging flood on the Knife River, although some risk remains, according to a National Weather Service hydrologist. Allen Schlag, a service hydrologist with the NWS toured the Beulah and Hazen area Monday and found that conditions had improved measurably in the weeks since his last visit. His preliminary results estimate that about half the water that was in the snow at the beginning of the month has melted and is soaking into the soil instead of running off into Spring Creek and the Knife River.
