Floodwaters ravage Mercer County roads
Morale isn’t the only thing crumbling under the pressure of woeful weather, as roads across Mercer County have taken a beating from the recurring floodwaters and heavy runoff this spring. The Knife River, measured just south of Hazen by the United States Geological Survey, was recorded at just less than 25 feet early Tuesday morning. Moderate Flood stage is 24 feet, and Major Flood stage is 25 feet. The Knife rose significantly Sunday and through Monday, Mercer County Road Superintendent Roy Braun said, but appeared to be dropping as Tuesday progressed – as was the case of Spring Creek in Zap, he noted. USGS observations predict the Knife will fall below 20 feet by Friday, according to the National Weather Service’s Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service.
