Getting a grip on the numbers

By Daniel Arens

County residents, county employees and county commissioners are beginning to see the figurative light at the end of the tunnel when it comes to the drawn-out budget process.
The question is, will they like what they see when the light shows where the county is at.
By Oct. 10, the Mercer County Commission must finalize its 2020 budget and submit it to the State of North Dakota. There is one more step in the process the commission is required to take before such a final approval: a public hearing with the county taxpayers.
This significant meeting will take place during the regularly scheduled commission meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 18, starting at 10:30 a.m. The commission has the option of approving the final budget after that hearing closes, or of postponing the decision briefly, although they must decide (and have the final result submitted) by the Oct. 10 deadline.
