Hail Hazen’s Harvest Fest
On Easter, you go to church and hunt for Easter baskets. At Christmas, you open presents. During Thanksgiving Day, you eat until you can’t possibly eat any more. In early September, you celebrate Hazen’s annual fall celebration: Harvest Fest. Harvest Fest has a long-standing tradition in Hazen. The fall celebration that Hazen has become known for began in 1940. In the Sept. 14, 1950 edition of the Hazen Star, a full-page advertisement proclaims the arrival of the 10th annual Hazen Harvest Festival, Sept. 18-19. In the ad, over $200 in cash prizes were announced for outstanding exhibits in the Mercer-Oliver Counties Grain and Garden Show. An opening day parade opened the festivities Sept. 18, with a “first of it’s kind in Hazen” night parade 8 p.m. Sept. 19. J. Phillips-Robertson – musicologist, baritone and actor – was also scheduled to provide his unique interpretation of the Music of 1951 B.C. Harvest Fest specials abounded, with deals such as t-bone steaks for 65 cents per pound at Hanewald & Weigum.
