Halloween weekend presents special Hazen events

Halloween is approaching, which means the first seasonal decorations are going up, kids are getting geared up in their favorite costumes, and residents are deciding how much candy to stock up on for trick-or-treaters. The community of Hazen offers several opportunities for people to get involved in the holiday fun.
Students from the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) program in Hazen will be trick-or-treating Halloween night for paper products, toiletries, and canned food. These items will be donated to the local food pantry at English Lutheran Church.
These students, roughly 15 in total, will split into fi ve groups covering five designated areas in Hazen. They will be dressed in Halloween costumes or FCCLA shirts.
The pantry is in specific need of canned vegetables, and paper and personal care products.
The food drive is being conjunction with FCCLA member Breanna Sailer’s “One Homeless Night” event, which Sailer is putting on with help from members FCCLA chapter. The event is designed to raise awareness of the problems of homelessness in the country.
Sailer said that “a lot of times homelessness is misunderstood as ‘they’re lazy.’” She hopes that the event, which will include Powerpoint presentations, lectures, videos, and possibly a bonfire, will help educate people about homelessness, while the food pantry items can be used to help those in need during the busy holiday seasons.
Hazen’s Chamber of Commerce is also holding a “Trail of Treats” for the first time in the community. Businesses
that take part in the event will hand out candy to children in town from 2:30 - 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30. The Trail of Treats also includes a Halloween costume contest.
