Hazen Fire Department rises to the occasion

By Lee Coleman

At 5:09 a.m. Dec. 4, the Hazen Fire Department received a page from the Beulah Fire Department requesting mutual aid for a fire burning inside the Coyote Station power plant in Beulah.
An all-volunteer fire department, 14 firefighters from Hazen responded and joined forces with 17 firefighters from Beulah and four from Zap to fight the fire that started from a mechanical failure.
According to Hazen Captain Kasey Lesmann, the Hazen firefighters were on the scene for a little more than 11 hours. Lesmann said Mercer County Emergency Manager Carmen Reed and RDO Equipment brought sandwiches, chips, cookies, water, and pop to the scene so all 35 firefighters would have a chance to take a break and refresh.
“There was plenty of food and plenty of beverages for everyone,” Lesmann said. “We had enough people between all of us that we all got a chance to rest and switch people out and rotate through.”
