Hazen fireworks show draws big crowd

By Lee Coleman

Mother Nature cooperated on a warm Fourth of July last Friday as the Hazen Chamber of Commerce hosted the 2014 Picnic Baskets and Fireworks Show at the Hazen High School football field.
The fireworks were provided by Lew’s Fireworks as the Hazen Fire Department put on quite a show firing the fireworks from the far north side of the high school property.
“I want to thank the firefighters for taking time away from their families to volunteer to shoot off the fireworks,” said Chamber Executive Director Terri Philion. “ They were in full gear in case of a fire and it had to have been incredibly hot for them in their gear. I appreciate them giving of their own time.”
Although the gates opened at 7:30 p.m., the crowds didn’t start arriving until nearly 9 p.m. As the show started, Philion said, the bleachers were full and the field parking lot and the parking lot at Peace Lutheran Church were all packed.
“I got a little worried when there weren’t a lot of people there at 9 (p.m.),” she said. “By 9:30, it was full everywhere. I thought the show was outstanding. The fireworks were excellent and we got a big bang for our buck."
