Hazen girl joins new student cabinet

One Hazen girl is working to bring a new idea from her school to the rest of the state.
Lucy Pulver, a sixth grader, was selected to join the North Dakota State Superintendent’s Student Cabinet. She joins 19 other students from around the state in this organization, which helps N.D. Superintendent Kirsten Baesler address student and education issues. Students range from as young as the third grade up to college students. It also includes a mixture of large and small towns represented.
“I didn’t think I was going to get in there when so many applied, but I was pretty excited when I found out,” Pulver said.
For Pulver, a top priority is getting the word out about the “late start” which Hazen Elementary School began implementing this year. Each Wednesday, the school starts at 9 a.m. The purpose of this one-day-a-week late start is to allow teachers to use that time to discuss ideas and goals they have with each other and to work on professional development. Students who arrive before 9 a.m. are supervised until classes begin.
