Hazen library welcomes new head librarian

Over the last 16 years, Valerie Albrecht has helped the Hazen Public Library thrive within the community. Now, she has decided it is time for her to move on, but another Hazen resident will stand up to fill the shoes she has left behind.
Sienna Sailer, originally from Napoleon, has lived in the Hazen area for 35 years. Her husband Kevin is originally from Stanton. After retiring from Roughrider Electric, she now plans to take on Albrecht’s mantle as Hazen Public Library Director.
Describing her time as library director, Albrecht said, “The biggest thing for us was we became automated, part of the Central Dakota Library Network.”
This system allowed Hazen library patrons to receive access to thousands of new books.
With the growing library, Albrecht said that about 20 new rows of bookshelves were included in the small Hazen library building.
“That came about because our circulation increased, people were still reading old books and also wanted to read new ones,” she said.
Another accomplishment Albrecht said she is proud of is the start of a monthly book club and discussion for adults, led by staff member Judy Dinkins. She praised the library staff for their work and good spirits.
“This library wouldn’t be what it is without these employees,” Albrecht said, adding that she doesn’t like the word “boss” being applied to her. “I feel more like we work together.”
However, she said that ultimately, what she will miss most will be the kids.
“I’m going to miss watching the kids grow up,” she said. “It has been so much fun watching them change and become these adults.”
