Hazen sends helping hands during flood fight
Sue Retterath, Hazen, was hoping at least 40 people would show up at the school on June 1 to ride a bus to Bismarck to help sandbag. Someone else thought there would be about 20, if that.
By about 7 a.m. that day, around 80 people from Hazen and the surrounding area had arrived, gloves and shovels in hand, ready to go to Bismarck for the day and help residents of Bismarck, Mandan and the surrounding areas save their homes. Some people drove separately to the sandbagging site, bringing the total estimated number of Mercer County residents at that site to nearly 100.
