Hazen student receives award for artwork

Hazen student Jonah Zimmerman has become well-known for his skill with painting, notably having made a large bison mural outside the library at the high school. Recently, however, his work has been admired statewide, and will soon be on display nationally.
With the help of Art Teacher Rhonda Helde, a painting of Zimmerman’s entitled “Mighty Universe”, featuring a hawk, bison, and antelope against a black background was entered in a state art competition held in Minot. Zimmerman’s painting was selected by North Dakota Representative Kevin Cramer for the Congressional Art Award. As a result, Zimmerman’s painting will be displayed for one year at the United States Capitol.
Zimmerman and one other person of his choice will receive plane tickets paid for by Southwest Airlines to fly to Washington, D.C. to receive the award. The awards are given to one work of art for each state, and the recipients will have the opportunity to meet President Barack Obama and other government leaders.
Zimmerman used a range of colors for the animals in his painting, including red/orange for the hawk, yellow/green on the bison, and a mostly blue antelope.
