In split vote, commission approves 2020 budget

By Daniel Arens

As the final minutes before deadline closed in, a narrow decision allowed Mercer County’s budget to pass and be submitted in time.
Commissioner Merlin Dahl moved to approve the 2020 budget during a special meeting on the subject Oct. 9, the day before the state deadline. Commissioner Wayne Entze seconded, and the motion passed 3-2, with Dahl, Entze and Chairman Duane Scheurer voting in favor and Commissioners Marv Schwehr and Dwight Berger dissenting.
Schwehr and Berger both cited continuing concerns over certain aspects of the budget itself and the budget process as reasons for their dissent.
