Large turnout gathers for annual Jazz Night

By Daniel Arens

Expectations for a great show filled the Hazen community as the school district celebrated 20 years of musical talent and community involvement.
The 20th Annual Hazen Jazz Night, featuring performances by the Hazen Junior High Jazz Band, Hazen High School Choir, and Hazen High School Jazz Band, was a large success. Chairs had to be added to the wings of the high school theater to seat everyone in attendance.
Along with a wide variety of musical selections and a great array of highlighted student talent, the night featured Dr. Lucas Bernier, Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Mary. Bernier performed various percussion roles alongside the Hazen students.
The success of this event was largely due to Kim Wolf and Penny Mattheis, the co-chairs who were the primary organizers of all aspects of the night. Besides the concerts, there was a spaghetti feed and silent auction, both of which were also well attended. The high school Uncommons and theater were also decorated for the festivities.
The Jazz Night performances and other events are a large fundraiser for the Hazen musical department in paying for trips that the students are able to go on.
