LEPC looks at new hazard mitigation plan

The Mercer County Local Emergency Planning Committee met last week and the five-year revision of the Multi Hazard Mitigation Plan (MHMP) topped the agenda for the meeting held at the Mercer County Ambulance Service.
Emergency Management Director Carmen Reed said the LEPC had received a $20,000 grant to implement the required five-year update of the MHMP.
Karen Day of KLJ Community Planning was on hand to present the early stages of the plan and an overview of the entire scope of the plan.
Reed said for the grant to have been approved, all six cities in the county had to agree to participate in the program.
“If a disaster happens in a community that is part of the program, funding will be available,” Day explained.
First and foremost, the county must identify mitigation hazards to reduce the impact of a disaster.
Accordingly, the plan calls for three areas to assess such hazards including risk vulnerability, mitigation strategy and plan maintenance.
