Lives lost, but memories preserved

By Daniel Arens
As North Dakota State Adjutant Ron Matthews said, 1 million Americans have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country in the years since the Revolutionary War in which our country and the conflicts it has faced began.
But, as Matthews also said, Memorial Day exists to ensure that not one of those sacrifices goes unremembered or unhonored.
Matthews was the guest speaker at the Hazen Memorial Day Service this year. Raised in Garrison, he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in both West Berlin and Georgia before his honorable discharge and subsequent dedication to the American Legion.
“I’ve lost quite a few people in these wars that I’ve known personally,” he said. “There are heroes. There are still some among us.”
