Local theater to perform “Oliver!” this week

By Daniel Arens

The Sakakawea South Shore Community Theater will be performing “Oliver!”, a well-known play about the adventures of an orphan boy, at Hazen High School.
The play will run from Thursday, June 25, through Sunday, June 28. Show times are 7 p.m. June 25-27 and 2 p.m. June 28. Adult tickets cost $10 a piece, while student tickets cost $5. Tickets can be purchased at the front doors.
The performance features talented actors and actresses from around the region who have been working for more than a month every Sunday through Thursday evenings to put together the performance. Work has also included set building and design on Saturdays.
As the new editor of the Hazen Star, I have had the wonderful opportunity of joining this amazing cast as a performer in the play. It was interesting to be approached early on and asked if I wanted to participate in this performance. I was hesitant because of my responsibilities with the newspaper and the amount of time I would have on my hands to devote to rehearsals. I was eventually roped in, and have been very pleased ever since that I joined the cast.
That doesn’t mean there hasn’t been some exhausting work put into it. Memorizing lines, hashing out choreography, carrying extremely heavy tables -- these performances take both physical and mental commitment. So maybe I can blame tiredness for slipping up the dates in last week’s article. I mean, I’m an editor AND I’m in the play, and I still got the dates wrong?
