‘Hack attack’ under investigation
Law enforcement is investigating a report that a hacker swiped about $230,000 from Mercer County after gaining access into a county account at Union State Bank, Hazen. According to Mercer County Auditor Monte Erhardt, USB notified him in mid-May 2009 that there had been unusual activity in the county’s checking account at the bank. Upon both parties realizing the withdrawal of funds was unauthorized, Erhardt said the bank was able to halt the transaction and recover about $130,000 of the money.
