‘I think we’re gonna have it’
One major hurdle in Hazen’s quest to keep the State Highway 200 Bypass recognized as a levee could soon very well be cleared. With new hydrologic models of Antelope Creek in north Hazen nearing completion, engineers from Ulteig Engineering will soon be presenting data to the Mercer County Water Resource Board that could be submitted to FEMA. The data would work on Hazen’s behalf to show the bypass has 3 feet of freeboard – one of Federal Emergency Management Agency’s major requirements when recognizing accredited levees. An accredited bypass levee would prevent all of Hazen south of the bypass from falling into the high-risk, high flood insurance premium flood zone.
