Macee Smith named statewide essay winner

By Daniel Arens

What would you do, and what changes would you make, if you could be the mayor of your town for a day?
It’s a question several Hazen Middle School students had to answer in one of their classes. And one of the responses caught the eyes of the North Dakota League of Cities, who sponsor the writing competition.
Macee Smith, a seventh grader, said she was proud to be a resident of Hazen, highlighting the many benefits the community has. But she didn’t shy away from offering her thoughts about how things could be even better.
“Hazen is a pretty small, but nice town,” Smith’s essay began. “There’s quite a bit of sports and activities to do. We have a nice hockey rink, movie theater, store, restaurant, and our city works hard and does what’s best for Hazen.”
