Mayer offered principal job
By Jarann Johnson
Imagine being told you can choose salt or pepper but not both for a bland dish. That was the situation Hazen School Board members found themselves in Monday evening when they interviewed two candidates for the high school principal position.
The salt or pepper represented experience. John Gartner, a 1976 University of Mary graduate, interviewed first for one hour and showed off his vast experiences in education.
Gartner’s resume included jobs away from education for about 12 years and jobs in education for 26 years. Gartner was a Promoter/Manager for the Mandan Stock Car Association for two years and the Mandan Director of Parks and Recreation for ten years.
On the education side, he spent 15 years as a teacher and coach – 13 years at Bismarck St. Mary’s and two years at Fort Yates Public School. In 2004, Gartner moved into educational leadership – three years as an assistant principal at Standing Rock High School, followed by one year as the Standing Rock High school Principal.
