Mercer County 2010 census forms being distributed

Well, it’s that time of the decade again.

This month, 2010 census forms – touted as 10 questions in 10 minutes – will be delivered to every residence in the United States and Puerto Rico. On the local level in Mercer County, form delivery began March 1, according to Mercer County Complete Count Committee member Cindy Johnson.

Instead of census forms being mailed to residents, in Mercer County, census workers will be visiting residences to deliver a census form. If no one is home they will leave the form in a bag on the door. Residents are asked to mail in the completed form within six weeks of delivery, and those residents whose forms are not returned by mid-April will be contacted again, Johnson said. Residents will not be asked for their income specifics or Social Security numbers. The FBI checks all census employees’ backgrounds and any personal data the resident provides is protected under federal law.
