Mercer County flood chances remain steady
A stretch of dry weather in February has stabilized the probability of flooding along the Knife River and its tributaries. However, barring an uncharacteristically slow melt, the National Weather Service predicts that some flooding is almost inevitable. The NWS released a new flood outlook for the Missouri and James River basins on Friday. That forecast put a 90 percent probability that the river will reach 25 feet at the gauge at Hazen. Beulah Mayor Darrell Bjerke compared that to past floods, saying the second crest of the 2009 flood was at 24.9 feet.
