Opportunity shot of a lifetime

By Daniel Arens

As long as possible, one Hazen woman has shown continued determination to fulfill a dream opportunity. This year, that opportunity came for her.
Laci Hiatt was one of the select few drawn for an elk license in North Dakota in 2018.
“I put in every year,” Hiatt said. “This year, I was lucky, I guess.”
Growing up in the northeast part of the state, Hiatt had accessibility to hunting grounds near towns like Cavalier and Walhalla. The season opened in October, and Hiatt and her father Randy began scouting out potential sites.
The first day, she didn’t see any elk. But on the next day, hunting by Walhalla, she spotted a few.
“They ran from us before we could get set up there,” she said. “It was discouraging, but it was good to at least see them.”
