Regional actors perform “Oliver!” in Hazen

By Daniel Arens

This previous week, talented actors and actresses from throughout the region came together at Hazen High School to bring a classic musical to life.
The Sakakawea South Shore Community Theater performed the well-known play “Oliver!” June 25-28 at the Hazen High School Auditorium. The performances were the result of a month of evening practices and preparations for the performers.
“Overall, I am blown away at the amount of work and dedication the whole cast brought to the production,” Nathan Kurtti, Hazen resident and director of the musical, said in reflecting on the performances.
There were a large number of kids in this performance, which is rare, and Kurtti said it was unbelievable how well they performed for their ages.
Kurtti has been in the performances for several years but had never directed a production before “Oliver!” He said that, by being in the director’s position, he saw the whole story put together, and commended the performers for never faltering in their energy during any of the four performances.
Kurtti said that, by being in the director position, he has gained greater appreciation for what directors have to do, including the amount of hours needed outside practice to ensure that everything runs smoothly.
