Regulations governing a change in commission
With all the talks surrounding a potential switch to a five-person County Commission this year, now is a good time to understand the regulations governing that potential change.
First, a petition would have to be filed containing a certain number of signatures from qualified electors of Mercer County. That number – 1,110 in this case – is determined by North Dakota Century Code 11-12-01 where it states that “20 percent of qualified electors of a county, as determined by the number of votes cast for the office of governor at the preceding general election, shall petition the board of county commissioners for” either an increase or decrease in number of commissioners.
