Remembering their sacrifice

As Memorial Day approaches, two local communities are preparing to honor the occasion with special events.
At 10 a.m., veterans, their families and their communities will gather at the Hazen High School Theater and the Stanton Civic Center for solemn ceremonies of remembrance. Unlike Veterans Day, which honors all veterans past or present, Memorial Day is a special occasion for remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedom.
Adjutant for the American Legion Department of North Dakota Ron Matthews will be the guest speaker at Hazen’s Memorial Day service. Born and raised in Garrison, he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1977 after graduating from high school, and served during the Grenada/Lebanon era until 1984. He was stationed in West Berlin, Germany, and Fort Benning, Georgia.
