School board considers policy changes

By Daniel Arens
During last month’s regular school board meeting, the board members discussed several policy change recommendations with Hazen School District Superintendent Ken Miller.
The first policy change that Miller presented to the board involved emergency closings. Changes in this policy were just words and phrases, such as “other emergencies” to “other unexpected and extraordinary circumstances” and “his/her” to “their.”
The next policy was the one with the most extensive changes, involving an entirely new policy to be drafted. This relates to Section 504 of The Rehabilitation Act of 1973, involving students with individual personalized education plans (temporary or permanent), but who are not special education students. It could include situations like a student being in a car accident or having diabetes, which might entail special circumstances for that student within the context of the regular classroom and school day.
