School Board talks teacher housing, pre-school

By Chris Erickson

Two of larger discussion items had by the Hazen Board of Education last week included the Hazen Pre-School and teacher housing.
Kelsey Garrett and Marti Raad spoke to the board on behalf of Hazen Pre-School.
“We struggled to find qualified candidates this year and had to change our status from Hazen Pre-School to Hazen Play-School for the year,” Garrett said. “We wanted to approach the board and say what involvement would the Hazen school like to have with the pre-school. We looked into the North Dakota Department of Instruction on pre-Kindergarten content standards and an update on an early childhood education initiative.
“We saw that there were some grants available to public schools to award to support, enhance, establish or create a new early childhood education environment in the school,” Garrett continued. “We thought it may be something the Hazen school may be interested in and that it may be easier to staff and get teachers for the pre-school program if it was through the school.”
