Slippery roads spell trouble for weekend motorists
Thursday morning’s temperature painfully tickled 40 below zero. By Friday afternoon, the sun was shining on a semi-balmy 31-degree day. At long last, temperatures had warmed. Though along with the warmer temperatures Friday came a lot of wind, dropping temperatures far enough to halt the melt – and produce hazardous driving conditions that sent multiple vehicles into the ditch this past weekend, keeping local emergency officials and tow trucks busy. According to Mercer County Sheriff Dean Danzeisen, the eventful weekend began Friday night when six cars were reported in the ditch along highways across Mercer County. The re-freeze had created black ice conditions, he said, which surprised drivers and made travel extremely difficult. Saturday, the sheriff’s department was informed of five more vehicles in the ditch along State Highways 200 and 49.
