Spring planting slow in early going
Gary Knell farms northeast of Hazen and began his spring planting the first week of May, about three weeks later than usual.
It's a story typical of farmers throughout the state this spring.
The late start and search for dry acres altered Knell crop rotation, replacing some acres originally slated for sunflowers with other crops. Sunflowers can be planted until early June, Knell explained, a luxury many other crops don’t afford producers.
