Stopping before a problem arises
By Daniel Arens
When two of the busiest streets in town intersect, it’s probably a good idea if there’s a clear delineation of who has the right-of-way.
Granted, the joining of Main St. with 4th Ave. NE (the road running from Highway 200 and Cenex south towards the railroad tracks and Dakota Agronomy) is peculiar for a major intersection. It’s a three-way, not a four-way, crossing, and the turn onto or off of Main St. is not a perfect 90 degrees, instead something between a turn and a merge.
Add to this the uncertainty over who exactly has the right-of-way, and you’ve got a situation that could produce a disaster if not addressed.
That at least was the consensus of the Hazen City Commission, which met Monday night. Although there have been numerous discussions at recent meetings about the issue, it wasn’t actually on the agenda Monday, but was brought up by Commission President Jerry Obenauer during his reports.
