Storm rolls through region

Producers in central North Dakota were on the edge of their seats Monday night as severe thunderstorms rolled through the area.
With crops maturing and looking good, each storm brings the fear that all the hard work and effort could be wiped out in a few moments by wind, rain, hail or tornado.
Monday’s storm chose to impact the Center area the most. A severe thunderstorm warning issued by the National Weather Service late in the day quickly became a tornado warning, with high winds and pelting rain wreaking havoc in Center and a large portion of Oliver County.
Trees were uprooted, tree trunks snapped in half and branches littered the ground in the storm’s wake; rainfall of 2.8 inches was reported. Residents in Center and parts of the county were without electricity for several hours while crews worked to remove debris from transmission lines and restore power.
Down Highway 200, at Hazen, temperatures began dropping with the area getting heavy rain around 5 p.m. Amounts averaged about 1½ inches. At 5:08 p.m., the tornado warning horn sounded, lasting until 5:13 p.m.
