Surviving severe weather

During dinner, the family could hear a faint rumbling of thunder off in the distance. After clearing the table, the television came on and the family was greeted by three beeps followed by a scrolling weather warning at the bottom of the screen.
This is a common scene in households during the spring until fall in North Dakota but what does it really mean?
A thunderstorm watch? A severe thunderstorm warning? A tornado watch or warning? How can a person decipher the verbiage and truly understand what these words mean?

On Monday, May 5 at 7 p.m., Sky Warn, a severe weather training class, will be held at the Hazen Fire Hall to help citizens navigate through the maze of facts concerning severe weather. An instructor from the Bismarck National Weather Service will teach the class, which is free to the public with no registration required.
