Sierra Club report asks EPA to monitor toxin discharge
By April Baumgarten
A study claiming coal companies are polluting water will help the Environmental Protection Agency keep resources clean, a Sierra Club spokesman in North Dakota said. But industry leaders call the report inaccurate and unreliable.
“Nationally there are some real hot spots and a lot of problems,” Sierra Club representative Wayde Shafer said from Bismarck. “In North Dakota, none of our coal plants are permitted. There are really no standards set or any levels. They are definitely discharging toxins into the water. It’s just that there aren’t any standards so there aren’t violations or impacts that are determined.”
