VanDyke named state champion in essay contest

By Daniel Arens
What would you do for Hazen, if you could be the mayor of the town for a day?
Third grader Lily VanDyke had some thoughts about that.
VanDyke praised Hazen for being a good community that is a “comfortable place to live and a really pretty place.” But she also had some ideas for what could be done in the future.
“If I was mayor I would make a pet store and a place to be while their owners are gone,” VanDyke said in her essay. “I would also make a park that isn’t a playground. I’d make a recycling center. Also an indoor pool. I would make another church. I would make a frozen yogurt place. I would get a small zoo. I would get a tiny carnival. I think Hazen would be even more enjoyable with some new things.”
